JUDGE SUES CLEANERS FOR $65 MILLION OVER LOST PANTS

The Associated Press reports that District of Columbia administrative hearings judge Roy Pearson has sued a cleaners for $65 Million for a lost pair of pants.

We are not so much surprised by the fact that the judge, who is representing himself, has rejected the $12,000 offer of settlement. Rather we are surprised that this guy has not been disbarred.

This case is yet another illustration of how little oversight is exercised over sitting judges. This problem is particularly acute in Family Court, where the judges make decisions without the assistance of a jury and where the attorneys must often temper their challenges to in-court rullings because the judges determine both who will pay their fees and the reasonableness of their fees.
