IS CONTEMPT OF COURT A CIVIL OR A CRIMINAL VIOLATION?
Our county jails are becoming increasingly filled with those who either cannot or will not meet their child support obligations. The article Case in Brief: Courts Uphold Criminal Penalties for the Failure to Pay Child Support provides a very good overview of the legal authority for criminalizing what some argue is a breach of a civil obligation. One question the article addresses is "Is contempt of court a civil or criminal violation?"
