TURNIP MISTAKEN FOR DEADBEAT AND JAILED IN SOUTH CAROLINA
The article "Supreme Court Weighs Rights Of 'Deadbeat' Parents," discusses the South Carolina case of Michael Turner who was a "Turnip" mistaken for a "Deadbeat." "Deadbeats," according to author Elaine Sorensen, "are parents who could pay but choose not to." "'Turnips'—"invoking the phrase, 'You can't get blood out of a turnip'—are parents who don't have the money to pay." Turnip Turner had no money to pay either his ex-spouse or an attorney to plead his case, so he was sentenced to jail.

You are right--except it's no Palace. And who do you think beneftis from the incarceration of Turnips?
I mean that the county jails in South Carolina are not Palaces and should be reserved for criminals and Deadbeats, not people who want to meet their obligations, but who are unable to do so because of unexpected and unavoidable misfortune.

I face appearing in court against contempt. My wife simply deserted the home, applied for services and was awarded custody. She stole money from household to buy for herself.Grand larceny. She refused to be married from day 1 no preceding fight. her 3rd marriage. She nightly planned desertion and spoke to women claiming to have girlfriends and children working in dss SC. Not to include personal connection with officials since they or their daughters had done this B4. She threatened at every oppty (4 years) to take our child and make me pay "her" and the govt will collect "my money". In marriage from day 1 refused to work reused to bring her car-left home. Couldn't afford divorce. Ran up bills. Bought for herself not child. I did everything including ultimatum to quit job if I was to see child. Lives with adult son sharing expenses. Sister left husband in Minesota same thing came back to scdss. 4 sisters all but 1 divorced. daughter -dss-kicked out of project for having job and money, later special program(mothers-single) and new house + 8000 tax credit. Wife deserted to achieve same.
Me facing foreclosure, unemployed 1 year, all bills left to me. educated and did for son. Spent all time with him while she sulked daily.
All she did was take him and because of my poverty and out of state.given custody and support. DSS sends notice of late- but see checks cashed. trying to create window to seize taxes unfairly. Can't file taxes. Wife changed name to mine(I was not informed)- whereas 4 years marriage she refused to, until deserting seeking tax credits. Seeks out grandparent for more money spending support on self. 1 payment missed. received no notice from DSS- discover missing later on own. cant pay as they might cash both checks. no electronic payments allowed, no receipts returned. wanted to pay but no way to know if correct. automated line never worked. Chose between health and paying. Collapsed at work. hospital emergency rm week later. further doctor bills. dizzy and lightheaded, racing heart while driving 90 min commute turns to 4 hours. am now forced to drive 3 hours to hearing despite failing health BP 233/107. Made payments on own before being assigned - 1 year. child gets that plus gifts and holidays. Somewhere in system friend may be misplacing a check or inappropriately documenting-
Proof of burden on me. despite able to show all checks cashed but 1 and see the postal purchase to send check coincides with payments. They are seeking money- despite I was never in the wrong. Child stolen - no legal representation can't afford. No glasses, no heat or air last two years-1 meal daily, no access to child. mouthful of damaged teeth, failing health.. borrowing car. left all bills. All because she said she could "use the system" to do it.
worked hard all life,church member- educated lots to give child. All unfair and no trial. DSS review-overlooked me and assigned money. no visitation. now I am accused of Contempt. 68% of children that county on subsidy.
Girls laughing at Health center -states going to have kids now to keep my shape- boyfriends don't know yet (laugh). Free medical for mothers. No measurable complaint just she wanted more money and couldn't get it so ran away live at home again with adult son-two income- no mortgage and bills paid by me in marriage. I was self maint. and paid everything. her complaint- too hard to get on system in this state- its easy and less lines where we are from in SC. No lawyer there has respondede to my request for representation. put on hold since 2/15 now 3/17. Wish I could just get 1 from DOJ or USAG to witness my hearing. Town full of boys without fathers-high crime-Fair? 2012.
